Swimming Pool Challenges
When many people use the same pool or spa it poses a risk for swimming related illnesses. Traditional filtration technologies do not sufficiently remove bacteria and viruses resulting in swimming-related illnesses:
- Hot Tub Rash
- Diarrhea
- Ear Infections
- Legionella Infections
- Red Eyes
- Respiratory Deceases
Old equipment and insufficient monitoring is responsible for serious swimming-related illnesses every year:
- More than 500 annual US outbreaks of serious swimming-related illnesses
- More than 50 annual US hospitalizations
- More than 10% of US routine inspections identifies disinfectant level violations
- More than 50% of US spas are in violation of local environmental health ordinances

The QLT Water System
We have developed a modular system for use in public pools and spas. The system offers unique advantages over traditional sand filters:
- 3 micron filtration (sand filters are typically >30 micron)
- 70% smaller footprint
- 60% lower water consumption
- 40% lower energy consumption
- Fully automated system – including chemical dosing and monitoring
- Lower chemical consumption
Operation
A vacuum is applied to the membrane to pull the water through. Solids and other contaminants are blocked by the membrane pores and are retained on the surface. Automatic backwash and chemical cleaning is periodically performed to dislodge and remove solids that have accumulated on the surface.

Many public pools were built 20-30 years ago and due to tightening water quality regulations, new and larger equipment now has to be installed. However, in older buildings technical rooms are not designed to accommodate larger filters and new equipment.
Our system offers a 70% smaller footprint compared to sand filters, which makes it ideal for both retrofits and newbuilds.
